Wishing for Acts of Kindness

This is Tyler standing in a very long line on the night before Black Friday last year.

Tyler was willing to battle the chilling conditions by standing in line for hours for a free $50 iTunes card to go with a $200 iPod purchase. You may well know that iPods rarely go on sale, but retailers sometimes give out gift card to make the purchase more enticing.

Tyler wanted an iPod in a bad way. So, he saved up half the cost and his nice parents agreed to pay the other half for his birthday, which was three days prior to Thanksgiving.

Today I come home to see Tyler all red-eyed because someone despicable broke into Tyler's locker and stole his iPod. Of course, I've already had this conversation with Tyler about taking this item to school and it being any easy product of theft. I heard a "But mom...one of my teachers has us use it in class." Tyler rest assured me that it's under a password and it wouldn't be of any value to anyone else without that secret password anyway. Besides, Tyler has it either on him or locked up.

I guess so much for that.

This can be replaced, but I'm sad. I'm disappointed. I'm fuming.

Why do people have to behave this way with no respect for other people's property?

You can be assured that taking things that aren't yours will certainly be a topic of lessons learned in kindergarten by this teacher.

Does the school have cameras installed in the hallways? It is a new building and it should. Our new school has them everywhere. I sure hope so and hopefully it will be found tomorrow.

I felt so bad driving Tyler home from school today. Wish I could have made it all beter for him. I also said that maybe when the person who took it finds out it won't work, maybe they'll take it to lost and found or something.

Braden was crying for him when we came home too. He really thinks a lot of Tyler.

That's awful. So sorry for Tyler, but just think - it could be worse. You could be the mother of the kind of kid who steal ipods out of people's lockers.

Excellent point, Mindee! I hope whoever stole it has bad dreams tonight out of guilt!

Oh, no! I'd be fuming, too, Amy. I'm really so very sorry that happened to Tyler. Why do kids (and adults) think it is ok to take something that isn't theirs? Drats!!! It just isn't right! I'm really hoping for a positive outcome for Tyler.....

My heart aches for Tyler, this is such a hard lesson to learn. Even if it has a lock/password, many are able to figure it out, I hate to say. That or they'll turn around and sell it to someone who knows how to undo it.
When my sons were in high school, we learned the hard way that they NEVER kept anything of value in their lockers. Twice we have had to replace expensive grafting calculators because they were left in a locker (once in the locker room, the other in their book locker). When I complained/reported the thief, I was told that they do the best the can to keep the lockers/hallway safe, but things happen. Sons told me they knew what group of kids were do it. If they know who is doing it, why can't the administration figure it out?

I tell my students that if something disappears at school, I don't want to know about it because I've warned them numerous times not to bring such items in. Our school has a 'no distractions' policy and iPods most certainly fall into that category.

Sorry that Ty had to learn such a lesson the hard way...

Teachinfourth--

You made an excellent point. I'm going to have to go to the school and see if I can petition such an idea...No Distractions policy. I haven't talked to a middle school parent yet that their kid doesn't bring such a thing to school. Then this issue will not be a problem again for anyone.
